In the processions of Semana Santa created in the seventeenth century, Brothers of Light carrying candles or torches appear, and Blood Brothers promise that penance or were barefoot, wore a cross or back flogged with whips or leather Esparto.
This tradicición disappears in the nineteenth century in most of Spain, although you can still see the Picaos in San Vicente de la Sonsierra (La Rioja) who keep alive this ancient tradition.
